You can make up your own math games such as while you drive in the car and count every blue or black car you see. You can also play normal math games like dominoes, backgammon, Yahtzee, or even chess. The goal is to incorporate basic math so your child can enjoy playing games with math and realize that math isn’t so difficult after all.
Use Math Everyday
Another great way to incorporate math into your child’s life is by pointing out the importance of using math every day. When you take the time to show your child why math is important, then they’ll be able to see why you need to learn math. In addition, if you use math every day your child won’t be as afraid of math because they know it isn’t as scary as it seems. You can also make math fun by using it every day. For instance, you can teach your child how to count out money or encourage them to bake or cook with you so they can learn why you need math.
Be an example
The best way to give your child an opportunity to love math is by setting an example. Children learn from example and therefore learn from you. When you actively say that you hate math and you hate everything math represents, then your child will learn from the example you set. If you do hate math, don’t make that a known fact to your child. Instead, take the time to show your child that math is important by incorporating it into everyday life as mentioned above. In addition, even if you dislike math, show your child that you are confident in it. When you show your child that you are comfortable with math and confident they’ll want to grow up to follow your example. You can also show your child the many different opportunities they can have if they like math and are old enough to understand what they like and dislike. For example, if your child likes to create castles and buildings with blocks, then show them how they can be an engineer or an architect if only they work hard enough.
