Three Outdoor Learning Activities To Try With Your Child
Helping your child learn isn’t only about your child doing all the work; you need to help too. When you show your child the importance of math or reading, then you’re child will follow by example. Read Encourage A Love Of Reading For Your Child and Encourage A Love Of Math For Your Child, to help your child learn to have a love of reading and math. With the three outdoor learning activities below, you’re able to help incorporate learning into fun activities. With these three fun outdoor activities, you can enjoy the great outdoors while helping your child develop a love of learning.
Activity One: Water Balloon Phonics
For this activity, you’ll need water balloons, a marker (preferably a permanent one), tape, and index cards. You take balloons – as many as you think your child’s attention span will hold – and fill them with water. Then, write the endings of words on them. Try to keep them within your child’s reading skills. For instance, if your child is in first grade, make sure the ends are ‘-at’ or ‘-ug’ – nothing too difficult to sound out. The balloons don’t have to be all different either, and you can have three or four endings and then make a dozen or so balloons, so your child has many opportunities to get it right. Now, on the other side of where the balloons are, put a few (depending on how many ends to a word you make) first letters. For instance, ‘B’, ‘M’, ‘C’, for your child to match up with the balloons. The purpose of the game is for your child to grab a balloon with the end of the letters to match with the beginning of the letter. For example, your child could grab the ‘-at’ water balloon and then match it with the ‘C’ index card, then sound it out.
Activity Two: Sight Word
If your child loves sports, this is a great activity to try out. For this activity, you’ll need a flat surface, chalk, sight words, and a basketball. On a flat surface, such as a driveway or garage, write sight words with chalk. Write all of the sight words on the surface and, once your child is ready to play, call them out one-by-one. Once your child hears the word, then they’ll go over to the area and bounce the basketball over the word. This activity is great because you can help your child’s listening and reading skills as well as keep them moving while outside. The list doesn’t have to be too long, maybe five to 10 words or so, and your child will enjoy bouncing the basketball over to each word.
Activity Three: Nature Math
This activity combines nature and math. This also allows you to not have to do any prep work beforehand, except for choosing the park you’re going to go through. Pick a place to go, and while on the walk one person will point at different items such as a flower, tree, or bush. Then, the second person needs to find the same item later on the walk. This activity will allow you to count how many trees or flowers you saw while allowing your child to recognize what each item is. In addition, you’ll be able to encourage your child to exercise and spend time outside.
Take the time to help your child learn by sending him or her to a learning center to work on the skills they need assistance in. If you think your child has a reading disorder we can also be of assistance to help your child excel despite any learning disabilities they may exhibit.
