How many times have you fought with your child about doing his or her homework? Your child comes home from school and instead of doing any homework, they play videogames, watch TV, or play on the iPad. No matter what you do, you can’t figure out a way to get your child to disengage from their toys or technology to concentrate on doing their school work. Three Tips And Tricks To Get Your Child To Do Their Homework

Homework, as you probably remember, is one of the most unenjoyable activities in school. No matter what age you were in school, doing your homework was probably something you dreaded, and as you graduated you were probably happy to never do it again. Unfortunately, many adults have homework from work, which is why it’s important to instill in your child the importance of doing homework. If your child seems to fight you every step of the way all night long with homework, then it’s time to encourage your child with these tips. One of the reasons children fight doing their homework is because they might not understand it, which is where our tutoring center steps in. With these tips and tricks, you’ll be able to help your child do their homework and even – dare we say – enjoy doing it. Remember, if you do your child’s homework they won’t be able to learn anything and instead expect you to always do their homework for them. You can help, but in the long run, it’s best if you concentrate on allowing your child to problem solve by figuring out their homework themselves.

Give Guidance

As we touched upon above, don’t do your child’s homework. Instead, you can give your child guidance in doing their homework. Guidance is not over-functioning or doing homework for your child. Giving guidance for homework is offering your child the assistance they need while not spelling out every little thing for them. For example, if your child is writing something and asks how to spell a word, tell them to sound it out and try it first instead of giving them the correct spelling right away. By guiding your child in homework, you’re able to give them the tools they need for problem solving.

Structure Is A Necessity

To be successful, you need some form of structure. Even if the structure is messy and confusing, it’s still important to have structure, especially for homework. For example, take the time to set limits to homework time. Like family time or dinner time, homework should have a set structure and time. After school can be a time for homework, right before bed can be a time for homework, directly after dinner can be a great time for homework. Whatever works best in your family, make sure there is a consistent structure for homework so your child can get into a routine to do their homework every night.

Take A Break

We all need to take a break once in awhile. Whether you’re frustrated at work, need to step back from the chaos of life, or you have four nagging children who all need something, we all need a break once in awhile to really re-set our brains and look at the situation in a new light. Homework is not different. To be able to really encourage your child to do their homework, it’s important to take breaks, especially when you can sense they are getting frustrated. If your child continuously doesn’t take breaks and he or she becomes frustrated every night around the same time, then institute a break every 30 minutes or so. If you get frustrated helping your child, then take a few minutes to calm down and re-set your brain so you can tackle the problem again.
